Neighborhood History

Artists and craftsmen have populated Magnolia Row's West Clawson neighborhood in Oakland for decades. This area is home to a diverse group of people including a strong creative community in the surrounding lofts and artists' studios. Iron sculptures, mosaics, and rustic fences dot the area and point to this creative presence. The renovation of The Clawson Lofts building (a circa-1917 schoolhouse) in 1999 made a significant impact on the evolution of the community, and the completion of Magnolia Row (which sits on the former Clawson schoolyard) brought an additional 36 new residences to this up-and-coming neighborhood.
